Tips For Growing The Best And Biggest Tomatoes

There are several key considerations for growing tomatoes:-

- Tomato plants need to be positioned so that they are in full direct sunlight for optimal growing and fruit ripening.

- The soil condition needs to be fertile and free draining, so it may be necessary to add sand or nutrients to your soil base before planting.

- The plants need to be grown in an area that is sheltered, to avoid plant damage and loss of fruit from wind. syngenta seeds

- Access to a water supply is important, as during hotter weather regular watering must take place to avoid plant damage.

- After initial planting has taken place, it will be necessary to feed at regular intervals to promote growth of plant and fruit.

Tomato Plant Varieties.

When selecting a plant variety, it will depend on where you intend planting, the available space you have, and the end use for your tomatoes.

Tall or climbing tomatoes require a larger area, and if you intend growing in pots, bush varieties are more suitable, as they do not require staking to support their weight. lancer gold

Cherry tomatoes are more suited to salads, and if you intend bottling your fruit, you should choose heavy cropping varieties.

Hints For Tomato Planting.

Once you have selected the site for your planting area, it needs to be fully dug over to a minimum depth of 8 inches (200mm) to loosen the soil. For each individual full sized plant, you should allow an area 24 x 24 inches (600 x 600mm) and if planting the tomatoes in rows, you should space them  40 inches (1000mm) apart. This spacing out allows for growth, access for trimming and thinning, and for tying up plants. Stakes need to be placed into the ground during initial planting, as this avoids root damage. If the stake is put in once the plant has already started growing, root damage can inhibit the plant growth. The stake can also provide support against wind damage once growth occurs. antracol

Tomatoes In Pots.

Space is a problem many people face, so if planting tomatoes in pots, you should grow bush varieties and put them in large pots. Plants placed in pots are likely to dry out compared to plants in soil, and you should use pots that are at least twice as large as your buckets. To avoid plants and soil drying out in pots, you can put your pot inside another to keep the direct sunlight off the outside of the pot, or place mulch over the soil. You will also need to water more often, sometimes twice a day to stop them drying out. mahyco

Tomatoes in pots should also be fed more often than those in soil, with initial feeding starting fortnightly, and changing to weekly once the plants are growing.
